5 Benefits of a Thermoplastic Roofing System

5 Benefits of a Thermoplastic Roofing System

When it's time to install or replace the roof on your commercial building, you face several excellent choices in roofing materials. One popular single-ply membrane product, TPO, offers several benefits worth considering. Manufactured from polypropylene and ethylene-propylene rubber with polyester fabric material (scrim), Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) brings a lot to bear on any low-slope roof.

1. Easy to Install on a Commercial Building

TPO is flexible and simple to work with. It can be mechanically attached with plates and screws, fully adhered (glued) or ballasted (weighted by river rock). Because the composition of TPO enables it to melt, the seams can be heat-welded using air heated to about 1,700 degrees. When hot welds are used, the seams acquire greater strength than they do using adhesives. Plus, walking heat welding machines make seaming the long runs easy and accurate. Hot air "torches" make short work of sealing all the waterproofing detail work around protrusions and corners.

2. Effective Protection

Able to resist tears, punctures, heat and cold, TPO stands up to weather and foot traffic. Also, it serves well as the waterproofing membrane on vegetative roofs (rooftop gardens). Its flexibility enables it to move with thermal expansion and contraction of the building, rendering it perfect for roofs in climate zones where extreme highs and lows are common.

3. Thermoplastic Endurance

When properly installed, preferably by full adhesion and heat-welded seams, a TPO membrane roof can last around 30 years. As a smooth, rubberized polymer product, it also requires very little maintenance. Simply have the installer inspect the roof annually for any signs of impending trouble, and the roof should serve, trouble-free for decades.

4. Cool, Green and Recyclable Roofing

One of the most attractive features of TPO is its low impact on the environment. When using white, the reflectivity reduces the building's internal temperatures on hot, sunny days, thereby reducing cooling costs. As the TPO reflects the sun back into space, it helps reduce the urban heat island effect. Buildings protected by white or gray TPO may qualify for Cool Roof status and contribute to LEEDS certification. TPO contains no toxic elements and can be recycled at the end of its useful lifespan.

5. Cost Effective TPO

Less expensive than some other single-ply membranes, TPO starts out as an economical choice from the beginning. Then, because it is available in longer, wider rolls, TPO can go down with fewer seams, which reduces labor costs. Additionally, TPO can be melted several times, so it's easy to repair seams should any develop splits during its normal aging.
